Aldam - Colapesce - Napoli 2021
Hi, Aldam has created a work depicting Colapesce, a legendary character from southern Italian culture. Naples (2021).
The legend of Colapesce is widespread in southern Italy. The origins of this story date back to the 12th century. There are several variants: the best known are the Sicilian and Neapolitan ones. The most famous version of the Colapesce legend is the one from Messina.
The story tells of Nicholas, or Cola di Messina, the son of a fisherman. Cola spent a lot of time at sea, so much so that he became a very skilled swimmer and diver. Nicknamed Colapesce, when he returned from his many dives at sea, he would stop to tell everyone about the wonders he had seen. Sometimes he would bring back to earth some real treasures.
The fame of the fisherman from Messina reached the King of Sicily and Emperor Frederick II of Swabia; the king decided to put him to the test. Together with his court, he went to sea in a boat and threw a precious cup into the water. Colapesce recovered the object easily. The king then threw his crown into a deeper place than before. Colapesce dived and recovered the crown. For a third test the king threw an even smaller precious object into the sea in an even deeper place: a ring. On this occasion Colapesce did not re-emerge.
